<p>The men’s team defeated Hong Kong, while the women’s team stunned the powerful Chinese to advance to the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Team Championships, which were held in Selangor, Malaysia, on Wednesday.</p>

<p>China was upset for the first time in a team event by the women, headed by two-time Olympic champion PV Sindhu. In the Group W match, 17-year-old Anmol Kharab had an incredible performance to guarantee a 3-2 victory for the Indians.</p>
<p>The men went on to overcome Hong Kong 4-1 to guarantee their spot in the top two in Group A.</p>
<p>However, the women’s team’s shock of China was undoubtedly the story of the day. After a protracted injury layoff, Sindhu demonstrated that she was not just recovering her form but also her confidence. She easily defeated Han Yue in the first game and then overcame a 10-point deficit to give India the lead by winning 11 of the next 13 games.</p>
<p>Despite a valiant effort by Ashmita Chaliha, the singles player, and Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa in the doubles division, India lost 1-2.</p>
<p>To even the score, however, All England semi-finalists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand overcame a game down to defeat the world-ranked duo of Li Yi Jing and Luo Xu Min, winning 10-21, 21-18, and 21-17 in an hour and nine minutes.</p>
<p>Then, with Anmol, the national champion, participating in the tournament for the first time, all eyes were on her. The 17-year-old maintained her composure under pressure from Wu Luo Yu to convert her second game point and earn first blood in a hotly fought first game.</p>
<p>The youngster seemed to be under strain as she dropped the second game and fell down 1-5 early in the third. She did, however, follow her strategy of keeping the shuttle in play, and with three consecutive points—22-20, 14-21, and 21-18—she won the rubber match.</p>
<p>India, being the best team in Group W, will go to the quarterfinals with only two teams.</p>
<p>“It is a special feeling to see the team beating China,” Badminton Association of India General Secretary Sanjay Mishra stated in response to the team’s triumph. More significantly, when we chose the squad, we trusted the youth, and I’m glad they performed well.</p>
<p>In the initial men’s singles match, HS Prannoy had lost, but the Indian team overcame that setback to defeat Hong Kong handily in the men’s team event. On Thursday, they will play China to determine the group champions.</p>
