Boxer Kaur Singh, who competed against Muhammad Ali, dies

Asian boxing champion Kaur Singh, who competed in an exhibition battle against Muhammad Ali, passed away on Thursday in a Kurukshetra, Haryana, hospital. He was 74 years old and receiving care for many medical issues.

He had been residing in his home hamlet of Khanal Khurd in the Sangrur region of Punjab after his retirement from the Indian Army.

In international events, including the 1982 Asian Games, Singh won six gold medals.

His four-round exhibition fight with boxing icon Muhammad Ali on January 27, 1980, in Delhi stands out as one of his most memorable contests. Singh has won the gold medal in heavyweight boxing at the Asian Games in New Delhi in 1982.

The Punjab government made plans to include the biographies of four outstanding athletes in the school curricula public this month. Kaur Singh is one among them as well.

Balbir Singh Sr., a three-time Olympian in hockey, Milkha Singh, a great athlete, and Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, India's first Arjuna Award winner and Olympian athlete, round out the group.

They are mentioned in the physical education textbooks for classes 9 and 10.

Finance Minister Harpal Cheema expressed his sorrow by stating that Kaur Singh's passing was a significant loss to the nation. I've instructed the appropriate authorities to make plans to transport his corpse to his place of origin. The family will get all of our assistance.

Kaur Singh received the Arjuna Award in 1982, the Padma Shri in 1983, and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 1988 in honour of his accomplishments.
